Agrarian Crisis – Public Event

Union of IT & ITES Employees (UNITE)

On 1st of September 2018, UNITE EC conducted an public event on “Agrarian Crisis” as a step to campaign scientific perspective among IT employees during period of mass farmers struggles and continuing farmers suicides in our country.

The event held at a hall on Perungudi where around 150 people from various streams of IT/ITES companies took part. The event was presided by Bharathi, Executive Member, UNITE and the first session was about the aim of UNITE by Alagunambi Welkin, General Secretary, UNITE where he explained why we organize the 99% of IT & ITES industry and why we stand for the 99%. Second session was delivered by Dr. R. Gopinath, Senior Scientist, MSSRF, he gave a brief overview on recommendations of National Commission on Farmers (NCF). Which was followed by the chief guest of event P. Sainath, Magsaysay Awardee, and founder of PARI. Sainath gave a detailed overview of what is the current state of farmers and agriculture and how policy followed by central governments both previous and current are anti-farmers and the root cause of distress in the agriculture. Sainath gave a call to donate for Kerala for rebuilding itself after the floods and invited all middle class to pressurize government to have a 3 weeks long special parliament to discuss the farmers issues. The event end note was delivered by Elango, Joint Secretary, UNITE by explaining the difficulties faced for organizing the event and thanking all the volunteers, members for making it a grand success. Event came to an end with a call for membership and donations.

Feedback forms and donation collected after the event gave us the true acknowledgement and a tremendous motivation to conduct more such events for the 99% to take forward scientific perspective on popular issues.

A new set of members joined us in taking forward the cause of 99% to safeguard the democratic rights of industry’s majority.
